CONVERSATION
at Barham

Conversation continues at Echuca

Over forty northern irrigators came together in Echuca and Moama for a second successful Big Conversation on August 9 & 10.

Conversations were plentiful and varied about the many challenges and options open to irrigators.

Paul Higgins from Emergent Futures challenged the irrigators to consider all the scenarios – good and bad – when planning for the future.

Lou Chirnside shared his strategies for defeating the drought by growing tomatoes in the Ukraine.

Russell and Sue Pearson hosted a tour of their dairy property and the nearby historic Perricoota Wool Shed.

Wilfred and Jenny Reuther shared their personal story of exiting the dairy industry and how they are now involved in different ways; Jenny as a NVIRP community representative and Wilfred with the National Dairy Education Centre.

Craig Whyte, Morrison’s Vineyard Manager talked about irrigation in the wine industry.

All those in attendance highlighted the value of spending time with other irrigators. “It was so nice to hear other people’s ideas, plans and scenarios,” said one farmer.

“It was a very necessary conversation to prompt us to look at our options,” said another.

A final Big Conversation is being planned for mid October, details of which will be posted to our website very soon.

An initiative of Community Leadership Loddon Murray, these events are funded through the Victorian Government’s 2009 drought assistance package and supported by the North Central Rural Financial Counseling Service.
